credit card debt elimination?
i am a college student living on my own and i have credit card debt that isn't that substantial (one card is $450, the other $285), but because i am paying my own way thru school and have other monetary obligations, it is still stressing me out trying to pay it down. can someone give me some suggestions on the quickest and most effective way to help pay those bills off before the increase (by the way: i already have two jobs, so i am working)
The way that makes the most sense mathematically is to pay off the card with the highest interest first, then pay off the other card. However, money is more than just mathematics… otherwise, every mathematician would be a millionaire!
Instead, the way we spend or save our money is heavily influenced by psychology. So, the method that is most effective for many people is to pay off the smaller debts first and larger debts later, because there is a psychological boost when you pay off a debt, which motivates you to continue tackling debt. This is called the "debt snowball" technique. I highly recommend the blog "get rich slowly", especially the entries from March 28, 2008 and February 5th, 2008. The blog is at http://getrichslowly.org/blog/
Has anyone used one of those "Debt Elimination" programs?
How well did it work for you and what where the longer term consiquences on your credit report?
Don't do it! It trashes your credit as bad as a Ch 13 bankruptcy & you may still end up getting sued. Now that it is harder to file Ch 7, creditors have very little incentive to take the low-ball settlements these companies try to get for you. Besides, the majority of these companies are scams. The Justice Dept & the FTC are shutting them down left & right.
If you want to know how to get out of debt fully, simply & honorably, go get a copy of the book below. It is the plan DH & I follow. It has been such a blessing in our lives. We now live on a budget, are paying off tons of debt accumulated in college & from a failed business. We never borrow money & we always have CASH on hand for unexpected expenses.
Anybody know anything about debt elimination companies?
I am interested in hearing from anyone who has used this service or know anything about them. I am looking into Creditsolutions.com

What book would a UK citizen/ EU citizen read for debt elimination advice?
Hi, I live in the states and I'm doing a marketing research report on debt and I need to find an English author who has written a book on the subject of personal debt elimination. It could also be simply a EU author as well.
In the US we have Suze Orman and Dave Ramsey two American authors who may or may not be popular in your country. I need to find a competitor in your country.
If anyone would be willing to shed some light on this, I would really appreciate it.
Thank you in advance.
That is along the lines of what I'm looking for.
Thanks, this has helped me out a great deal.
Martin Lewis provides a completely free and well respected online web site for UK-based advice on a wide range of financial matters. The site is http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/
.. I appreciate that this is not a 'book' but I would argue that he is as much an author as the person who writes a book!
Even if this is not what you are looking for, it's worth checking out.
Anyone tried the "debt snowball" debt reduction/elimination plan?
The one created by Dave Ramsey. Any suggestions, thoughts, or advice (successes or failures)?
It is/will be painfull to have to actually list my debts to do it. Yikes.
The idea is to knock out your smaller debts first. My husband and I are doing that now and I cannot wait until we're done! Wouldn't it be nice to only have one big bill a month instead of like 7+? Like, if all your "bills" are your mortgage/rent, groceries, gas, car insurance, etc. and no dreaded credit card bills, wouldn't that be awesome! Such a huge stress relief. Stick with it and you'll be glad you did! Good luck!
are ads for debt elimination legitamate, real solutions for high credit card debt?
I suppose it depends on how you look at it. First, somebody is making a profit or they would not advertise. Where do they make it?
There is no way of eliminating debt without trying to defraud the lender. If I borrowed $50 from you, under what circumstances would you let it go?
You can declare bankruptcy but that is a pretty painful way of doing it. Buying a house would be out unless you already own one. Interest rates on any new debt would be through the roof. Certain jobs, especially with the government and banking are no longer open to you.
Debt Elimination Vs. Debt Settlement?
Which is better in your opinion: debt elimination methods or debt settlement?
http://debteliminationmethods.com/
Chapter 7 bankruptcy is debt elimination of your unsecured (credit cards) debt.
Chapter 13 is debt settlement - settling with your creditors for a fraction of what you owe and then paying off the remainder.
Both will ruin your credit score for years and it will take at least 10 years for a Chapter 7 to vanish from your credit report.
For any of these you need to talk to a good bankruptcy lawyer. Only a good lawyer can help you with it.
If bankruptcy is not an option:
Here is a plan that will work but takes time, dilligence and discipline.
Cut up your credit cards…. don’t cancel the accounts… just cut up the cards.
Credit Card Debt: Start making twice the minimum payment on the card that has the highest balance and highest interest rate.
If possible pay as much down on this card as you can. Keep making min. payments on the other cards. Once the first card is paid off apply those payments to the second highest cards and add the min. payment you already pay on that card… and so on until they are all paid off.
This can take years… but it was you that spend that money and nobody but you got you into this mess.
While you are trying to pay down your debt it is important that you have a strict budget.
Sit down and write down the following:
Monthly Income
minus fixed bills (rent, utilities, set amount paid towards credit card debt, etc. AND fixed amount that goes into a savings account, even if it is just $25 a month.
What is left is your discretionary income and you divide this by 4.
Now you have the amount left that you can spend during the week on food, gas and whatever else you need.
Besides the set amount for your savings account you also need to set aside on a monthly basis any money you need for bills that come due only once or twice a year… car insurance, taxes due for property, etc.
